Honda vehicles are acclaimed for their efficiency, comfort, reliability, and overall well-roundedness. And with compelling cars, SUVs, trucks, and minivans in the industry's most popular classes, it's easy to find a new Honda that fits your Pasadena or Bowie lifestyle. Honda is also renowned for safety, thanks to sophisticated frame and chassis construction, intuitive drivability, and advanced safety technologies—the latter being the topic of this blog.

Every 2023 Honda vehicle offers a comprehensive array of driver-assistance features, collectively termed Honda Sensing®, including many as standard equipment. Below, we've provided a quick overview of common Honda Sensing® technologies and how they can help provide confidence and convenience for your daily drives.

Honda Sensing® Technologies

(Important Note: Before we begin, it's important to note that driver-assistance technologies are intended to support attentive driving, not as a substitute. Staying alert behind the wheel and following traffic laws are always the best defense against accidents.)

  • Forward Collision Warning and Collision Mitigation Braking System (standard on all Honda models): The cornerstone of the Honda Sensing® system, this technology continually monitors the road ahead to identify slower moving or stopped vehicles and sounds an alert if the difference in speed has the potential to cause an accident. If the driver is unable to respond in time, the system will automatically apply the brakes to at least limit the severity of an impact.

  • Lane Departure Warning and Road Departure Mitigation (standard on all Honda models): When lane markings are clearly defined, this system uses a camera to determine if the vehicle is about to unintentionally travel beyond the lines (i.e., without activating the turn signal). If the driver doesn't respond to the audible and visual warning, the system can apply steering (and braking if necessary) to help keep the vehicle on the road.

  • Lane Keeping Assist System (standard on all Honda models): When lane markings are clearly defined, this system automatically applies corrective steering to keep the vehicle centered in the lane. This feature helps limit fatigue buildup from continual steering adjustments on longer journeys. It can also work in tandem with Adaptive Cruise Control to form the Traffic Jam Assist system.

  • Adaptive Cruise Control (standard on all Honda models): Driving involves many small energy expenditures from continual speed and steering adjustment. While not immediately obvious, these efforts accumulate during a long road trip or tedious commute, resulting in driving fatigue. Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) helps to mitigate this negative effect by autonomously maintaining a safe distance from a leading vehicle up to a predetermined speed, limiting the need to alternate between the brake and accelerator pedals.

  • Traffic Jam Assist (TJA): This technology improves on the Adaptive Cruise Control concept, allowing it to function at slower speeds in congested traffic. It also incorporates Lane Keeping technology to help the vehicle remain centered in the lane. TJA is standard in 2023 Honda models like the Civic, Accord, HR-V, CR-V, and Pilot.

  • Blind Spot Information System with Cross-Traffic Monitor: These technologies monitor the sides and rear of the vehicle for objects that may be obstructed from the driver's view. When a vehicle in an adjacent lane is in or approaching the blind spot, the system illuminates an icon in the corresponding mirror, advising the driver to be cautious when changing lanes. When in reverse, Cross-Traffic Monitor looks for objects approaching from either side on a perpendicular path to the vehicle. This can be helpful when backing out of a tight parking space or blind driveway. These features are standard on many 2023 Honda models and optional for the HR-V, Civic, and Ridgeline.
